I was a very proud President last night at our Sub Branch Xmas Party in the function room of the Harbord Diggers Club.
The room sparkled with early Xmas cheer as 78 happy children’s book lovers flocked together to share stories, to celebrate successes and to be inspired by the achievements of our wonderfully talented guest speakers.
It was a credit to our hard working CBCA Northern Sydney committee; in particular Kirsty O’Rourke and Fran Jones. These two girls are getting so good at event management we could hire them out.
Alice interviewed Beecroft Bookshop guru Paul MacDonald. Paul brought us up to date with the latest best selling books. He also ran a bookshop of Alison’s books and there was a long line of people to get their books signed by Alison.
Sarah Davis magically created an original collage of a toucan and donated it to the silent auction. It was fascinating to see her work and also to hear her talk about some of the inspirations for her drawings and to hear stories behind some of her extraordinary creations.
Australian Children’s Laureate, Alison Lester was next. Alison enthralled us with tales of her expeditions to Antarctica and the project that has become her new book, ‘Sophie Scott Goes South.’
Alison Lester and Boori Monty Pryor have been the inaugural Children’s Laureates for the last 2 years. They have been travelling all over Australia promoting children’s literature and literacy.
A new children’s Laureate is due to be announced in the next few weeks.
It was a wonderful evening to mark the end of another successful year for our little Sub Branch.
Well done team. I’ve got a feeling that 2014 will be even better.
